Do you think the Nothingness is manifest in pornography, prostitution, war, greed, advertising, alcoholism, Hollywood, professional sports, and most everything that society gets wealthy on?Do you ever feel like the entire planet is overwhelmed with the Nothingness of existential philosophy?
Jean-Paul Sartre has written: "What is meant hereby saying that existence precedes essence? It means that, first of all, man exists, turns up, appears on the scene, and, only afterwards, defines himself." Thus man begins as a zero, a nothing, and then only becomes something. Hence man defines the meaning of his existence and beyond man there is no meaning to explain existence. Sartre also wrote: "Man is nothing else than his plan; he exists only to the extent that he fulfills himself; he is therefore nothing else than the ensemble of his acts, nothing else than his life."
The statement that existence precedes essence means that there is no human nature or human prototype to which all men ultimately conform. The word essence is most generally associated with a common element in all humanity. But in Sartre there is no human nature which can be known--this would require the existence of God to know it--and men are all different. Man makes himself and if he doesn't, he does not arrive.
I think that the examples you have given are derivatives of primary instincts, which many have found ways to capitalize and make money off of. Some have been pushed to extremes that I think the world could do without. I think that they contribute to the corruption of people and their souls. The overindulgences, the decdence that people suddenly believe they are entitled to, and are their rights, superceeding the rights of others not to have to be put through the aftermath that come about as a result of those who overindugle.Do you ever feel like the entire planet is overwhelmed with the Nothingness of existential philosophy?
no. i dont consider them as "nothing." they exist because something is wrong about the "something" of people across the globe. the said problems are symbols of how greedy people are, thinking mostly about their own interest and not minding that in order to get a peaceful living, we have to balance things. it may may close to impossible, but like i've said.. "close to impossible" it means there's still light amidst this foggy life we have.
You forgot Bollywood, and No i don't .Do you ever feel like the entire planet is overwhelmed with the Nothingness of existential philosophy?
Yes.
Philosophy is the dead end of the abstract mind separated from the experience of life.
Depends on what the meaning of nothing is.Do you ever feel like the entire planet is overwhelmed with the Nothingness of existential philosophy?
No. I don't feel things that make no sense.
I don't think the planet is overwhelmed by it. I also don't think it the result of existential philosophy. Many of those things have been around thousands of years and the others are largely a result of capitalism and corporate culture (not that cap. and corp. cult. are necessarily bad, I'm just saying).
They all exist more than they should but I think they are the almost inevitable product of being human. I don't think any philosophy or religion or entertainment venue or drug could ever get us away from those things.
Could be!
Nothingness is a unique concept that is typically discussed by those with an interest in philosophy. Most in the 'real' world have no concept of the expression or its experience.
The examples you mention speak more to disgust for the world the way that it is. I have zero to little interest in those examples that you mention, but I am fine with others who may want or need those things in their lives. It doesn't need to create a sense or state of nothingness for me. I can still continue my life unaffected by those issues and by the choices of others.
For example, I think professional sports are a joke, but i will support you if you tell me that this where you interest lies. I think the volumes of money are a colossal waste to the vanity and cruelty of society. But I'll still talk to you about how to become one if that is what you choose. I think elevating the player of a game/sport to the level of some great individuals in human history is damaging to the culture and to the minds of children who learn a distorted sense of what is important, but hey, if this is truly where you are and where you are going, so be it.
Of course, if sports were truly a rewarding and happy choice, then the problems of athletes wouldn't exist. The divorces, the scandals, the criminal activity, etc. Sometimes though, people need to learn by direct and very difficult lessons.
